All Mumbaikars must be well acquainted with the list of these baba bangalis I am talking about. The hilarious advertisements on the locals were a daily occurrence till the RPF (Railway Protection Force) put an end to this black magic tantriks ads that were bound to ruin people's lives.
Taking about India,
It is a god fearing country or is it God-loving????? Ahhh!!! there you are….
The controversy sparks there!!!!
There is absolutely no doubt in it, that India has its own beliefs in Gods and Goddesses!!!!. Whether it is their love or fear, let us leave it for an individual to decide. There are firm believers in God, staunch opponents in the belief of God and many diverse kinds of undefined or undefinable beliefs coexisting within the same country.
Whatever it is, in midst of all these beliefs there are some individuals who claim to be God sent Angels transcended to the prithvi loka (earth) for serving humanity!!! In the name of God they fruitfully serve themselves and humanity thereby comes to a downstream level, where it can be purged or discarded, least served!!!!
Anyways!! The point is, these so called saints or self proclaimed God - Men have always been in midst of some controversy wherein there is always a war between the beliefs of the people and reality!!!!
The recent episode of Ram Rahim is definitely not hidden from majority of us. His dream world in his "gufa" (cave) where the seven wonders of the world could be found at a single place was astonishing to witness. It is no doubt, the people of our country blindly follow the path they have been shown, either due to the problems they face or due to blind faith engraved in their mind.
So if many believe or say, the illiteracy or culture of our country makes us prone to these fraud babas (saints) then even the western culture is not far away from these cases. Then whether insufficient education is the cause of this blind belief or is it mesmerism of some kind or what in the world is it… That cannot be easily ascertained at this point of time .
If I take my personal opinion into account, I have been in contact with one of the doctors who is a staunch believer in a baba whose body is divine and God & Goddess reside in him. He believes that God enters one of his known baba's body and he starts behaving like maniac by torturing self or the others. Then God delivers the truth and suggests paths where there is a dead end and a miracle is bound to happen when the heavenly words are delivered from his mouth. It is very depressing to know that the so called educated people believe in such kind of people and pave a way for the illiterate people to fall into their clutches, more easily.......

Another instance, which I would like to quote is that, my well educated post graduate friend was in midst of a crisis wherein one of his family member was in a critical condition, battling for life. The doctors were trying their very best to normalise the situation but the chances of survival was 50%. Then, it was suggested by his near dear relatives to be in touch with a baba who could cure all the woes. The baba entered the ICU and claimed that all the satans orbiting around the sick relative were captured and the life was prolonged to more than quarter of the century. He claimed if anything wrong happens his throat can be slit. This provided a lot of confidence in my friend and he was happy that his relative would survive. Unfortunately…..the very next day his relative succumbed to illness.
And about the baba if you wonder whether his throat was slit!!!!!..........What to talk about slitting his throat… his existence even was questioned. He just disappeared into thin air…
What did these two instances suggest???????

It may be the belief in miracles which is imbibed in the minds of the people from ages together. It is the common human tendency that in midst of some crises, we are bound to believe in all the possibilities that can probably give rise to a miracle....
Anyways!!!!! We have heard about these saints, mullahas only from our society but it is not the case always. It is not just Indians who blindly believe in the babas but there are other saints who have duped people of their religious beliefs and have witnessed such fraudulent cases worldwide. Not even the developed nations like US are spared from these frauds!!!!!
We can certainly look over the self proclaimed Pious fraudulent saints of different cultures which many might be well acquainted. We all know the very famous of the infamous God-Men like Asaram Bapu, Gurmeet Ram Rahim, Swami Nityanand, Swami Agnivesh from India,.... The list is endless though but here we will discuss the lesser known saints whose pious frauds stirred out devastating effects in the country and over the world. The list is a compilation of best 5 from all the backgrounds. Though many may be missed out it is just a very small part of umpteenth frauds we are looking into.
1. Rajneesh or Osho:
He may not be a famous (rather infamous!!) personality among the people today but is described as one of the most controversial gurus of 20th century. He advocated a more open attitude towards sexuality, which earned him the title of "sex guru". Osho Rajneesh disregarded all laws, ethics and legalities as he wanted to create a society of his own vision with its own laws and rules. He fled from India as his misdeeds had taken a downfall and a possibility of his survival with leisure was at stake. So he took refuge in US where he spurred into new set of controversies. His list of controversies included,
Demand of 30 new Rolls-Royces within one month in spite of already possessing 96 brand new Rolls-Royces.
He staged a bioterrorist attack on USA which lead to the demise of 751 people due to deliberate contamination of salad bars at ten local restaurants in Oregon with salmonella.
Hatched a conspiracy to assassinate United States Attorney for the District of Oregon Charles Turner but the attempt failed to materialize.
Not only was his therapies questioned, there were allegations of drug use among sanyasins
2. Swami Premanand:
Originally a native of Srilanka. He entered India with several others during the Civil war and started a rented ashram in Tiruchirapalli and later established an ashram with 150 acres of land which sheltered orphans, women and their children mostly natives of Srilanka. The controversy spurred when in 1994, one of the girls living in the ashram, Arul Jyothi, escaped and reported that she had been raped and was pregnant. Premanand was held on trial and was found to be guilty.
On 20 August 1997, Premananda was sentenced to life imprisonment and fined ₹67.3 lakhs for 13 counts of rape, molestations of two girls and a murder. Failure to pay the fine was to carry an additional term of 32 years and 9 months. He was also convicted of cheating the residents of his ashram, which carried another one-year sentence.
3.Robert Tilton
Robert Tilton was, at one time, one of the most famous names in televangelism (self proclaimed christian God-Men) . Success-N-Life, was one of his popular shows channeled throughout the nation and earned the pastor’s church huge amout of money during the later 1980s and 1990s. He claimed that he had a special connection to God to personally pray over the requests and increase the chance of the prayer being answered and expected a small lumsome of money was sent along with it.
The system operated for several years until ABC’s Prime Time Live caught hold of the scam. They investigated and showed the proof of how the prayer requests were simply being thrown out in the trash, with all the money stashed in the lockers. He was sued by some people who sent him money for prayers realising his fraudent practices thus putting an end to his long earned income.
4. Peter Popoff:
Popoff hadd huge followers in faith healing circles in the 1980s, with his television show being broadcast nationally in the United States. Popoff used to call people out of his audience and by using his connection with God, he used to interpret the ailments they suffered before laying his hands on them and providing the cure.
The scam worked for several years in the 1980s, and it made Popoff a very rich man. However, his deeds eventually caught the attention of James Randi and Alexander Jason, who investigated the matter and found that people who attended Popoff’s shows were asked to write down their most important wish . These requests then went to Popoff’s wife, who used an earpiece to communicate to her husband. Peter would then call the aggrieved onto the stage, by guessing the issue they were suffering and providing a solution. Ultimately these revelation lead to his downfall and finally bankruptcy.
5. Ichchadhari Sant Swami Bhimanand Maharaj Chitrakoot Wale
Wow!!! What a name!!!!! But the fame and money he gained during 22 years of his regime was even more commendable.
From earning Rs. 2000 to earning Rs. 5 lakh every month is an appreciable chunk of amount. Shiv Murti Dwivedi alias Sant Swami Bhimanand Ji Maharaj Chitrakoot Wale was a high profile baba who had his links with the politicians and influential local authorities to run his massage parlour and prostitution rackets. Starting as a security guard at a five-star hotel at Nehru Place in 1988, he was later involved in a prostitution racket in a quest for making quick money. He was arrested once for running his prostitution racket and massage parlour but later on pretending to be a devotee of Shirdi Sai Baba, he used to meditate at a temple and soon attracted a string of followers. With their help, he bought some land and later built a three-storey house. The temple had CCTVs installed inside with the control room in his private chamber with a secret tunnel. He called himself Ichchadhari Sant Swami Bhimanand Ji Maharaj Chitrakoot and claimed to be a disciple of Sai Baba. But his glory was put to an end when his foul play was busted and he was imprisoned.
These five are enough to blow our minds as of now...
As I mentioned earlier, the list is huge and my motive was not to discuss the crimes these people were involved in but, with so many examples around it becomes difficult to understand how people are lured into the ridiculous acts of these babas who claim to be God-Men but their deeds decipher the eventual exemption of humanity from the face of the planet.
